Please open your Compendium of Curiosities to page 51, where you'll find the Alcohol Ink Monoprint technique. This is one of my all-time favorites! Alcohol inks are a blast to use, and you get such clean, clear tones with them. Plus, a little bit goes such a long way!

I hope you guys have as much fun making your project this week as I had with mine. The monoprint technique just naturally brings out the kid in me (yes, the messy, disorganized kid, but still...).

Drunken Stampers Get Bitten!

So, the Drunken Stampers Challenge this week is to create something Twilight inspired. The thing is, I haven't actually seen the movies or read the books, so the extent of my Twilight knowledge can be summed up in a single phrase:

"It has something to do with vampires."

Go ahead, say it. I'm a pop culture LOSER. I know. I feel bad about it, too. However, I do like the whole vampire mythos thing, so I took a more "generic toothy goth" approach to the theme, and threw in a hunky, tattooed, dreadlocked Creature of the Night, in hopes you'll forgive me.

I've had this photo in my file of digital found objects for at least ten years, and actually used it once before in an altered Anne Rice book. He wasn't all fanged up when I found him, but a little Photoshopping was all it took to transform him into a Lost Boy.

The background panel is plain black cardstock embossed with the Tim Holtz Damask folder and colored with metallic rub-on goo. This is mounted onto a piece of textured red cardstock that I'd pre-distressed with black Adirondack Paint. There's a piece of ripped black netting stretched across the photo, but it's kind of hard to see in all the sanguine chaos.

And then there's the "blood." I had to get all mad-science-y for this, because I was out of Skank Red nail polish and couldn't manage to get a realistic color from acrylic paint. After experimenting with every red medium in my studio and a few from the kitchen, I ended up mixing a couple shades of red reinker into Glossy Accents. Eureka! Bloody good! I dripped this concoction onto the card with a craft stick and let it run a little. Gory, huh?

(Remarkably, no actual blood was spilled in the making of this card. And that's unusual for me, because I routinely manage at least a couple of paper cuts when I'm crafting.)

Twilight fan or not, you've gotta love a challenge that you can (wait for it...) really sink your teeth into. So, when you're finished boo-ing at me, come on over to the Drunken Stampers Lounge, get vampire-iffic with us, and meet our super-talented guest designer, Lisa Strahl, too!

Gingersnaps Got the Blues!

Our latest challenge at Gingersnap Creations is "Shades of Blue," and that just makes me happy. I've always been a blue kind of girl. I've always been an owl kind of girl, too, so this was one of those fun projects where I got to combine two things I dearly love.

As you likely surmised, this was a very simple card to make. I stamped the image (from Tattered Angels) onto white cardstock, then went a little nuts with my Copic airbrush and about a half dozen different shades from the blue family. If you've never played with a Copic airbrush, take my word for it— it's crazy fun! And there's no mess to clean up afterwards (unless, of course, you twitch and end up airbrushing your wall or something, but that's unlikely). Basically, you just screw an adapter onto an air can, snap a Copic marker into the trigger sprayer, and away you go! You can switch out the colors faster than I can eat a Hershey's Kiss (and people, that's FAST!) and when you're finished, the only effort left is to put the cap back on the marker.

That's my kind of high-tech artiness. At least until I can afford a very patient and good-natured housekeeper.

But, back to that challenge. The only requirement is to use shades of blue. Really, that's it. Imagine the possibilities! No, really: IMAGINE them. Got it? Sweet. My own take on the Technique:

• Designer Paper from Tim's Lost and Found (letters) and Vintage Shabby (background) collections. 
• Tree Branch from I Brake for Stamps, stamped with Black Soot Distress Ink.
• Birds are from Tim's stamp, aptly titled "The Birds." I selectively stamped individual birds onto acetate using Denim Adirondack Paint before "fragmentizing" them. 
• Fragments are attached with Idea-ology Long Fasteners.

Drunken Stampers Get Bling-y With It!

Over at the Drunken Stampers Challenge Blog, we're continuing our month-long celebration of our List Moms' birthdays with this week's challenge: Peggy and Spike's Favorite Things! Raindrops on roses, perhaps? Whiskers on kittens?? Oh, heck no! We're talking COLOR and BLING!

With parameters like that, who could pass this one up?!

The Summer Solstice is just a couple of days away,  so this felt like a good time to bust out one of my all-time favorite stamps. I've used this image for every sun-related event for years now, and I sure do wish I knew where it came from! (If anyone can tell me, I'll send you a little present.)

Surprisingly, I colored this with my ancient set of Le Plume markers instead of my shiny new Copics. I'd already embossed the image in black (duh!), and believe me when I say that Copics and colored embossing powders don't play well together. At all.  (Although clear powder usually works just fine. Go figure.)

As for the bling, that big orange fireball is made with Luna Lights metallic ink, The Shiniest Stuff on Earth. And, if you look closely, you'll see about a half-bottle each of Broken China and Faded Denim Distress Stickles layered over the blue-painted sky. Take this card out into the daylight and you'll need to view it through welder's glasses to avoid eye injury. Okay, maybe not, but you get the idea.

Gingersnap Creations and A Midsummer Night's Dream!

We're celebrating summer with a "Fairies" Challenge at Gingersnap Creations this week! How perfect for midsummer, yes?

This card itself is kind of a celebratory thing for me, actually, because the main image was created during my Copic Certification workshop on Sunday. That's right:  I'm a Certified Copic Designer now! I had a blast at the class, met lots of great, artistic people and soaked up several years worth of inspiration from the amazingly talented and  fun instructor, Jennie Black. Copics rule!

(I have Spike over at Drunken Stampers to thank for my discovery of Copics, by the way. She "schooled" me in the basics and that was all it took for full-blown addiction to set in.)

Now, about the image itself. This cool little princess is from Loralie Designs, a company I'd never even heard of until last weekend but am now completely in love with. You've gotta check out their stamps! "Funkalicious" is the adjective I'd use, and for me, it doesn't get much better than that!

So yes, I colored our funky fairy princess with Copic Sketch markers, and also used the Copic airbrush system to tint the little flowers. The stamp, by the way, isn't actually a fairy at all, but I added some Glimmer Glass wings that I'd blinged up with foil leafing and shazam: Instant fairiehood! The background papers here are Kaisercraft and Bazzill.

The Gingersnaps Fairies Challenge runs through July 18, so you have plenty of time to whip up your own Titiana, Tinkerbell, Toothfairy... anything you like! Can't wait to see your magical work!

Compendium of Curiosities Challenge Begins!

Challenge #1: Water Stamping

This is such a simple and quick process, but the results can be incredibly elegant. I love that we can get a bleach-stamped look without subjecting ourselves to chlorine. No burning eyes. Love that!

I've posted my own version of a Water-Stamped card above, and here's something I figured out after remaking it a few times: This technique calls for simplicity. Too many embellishments, and the subtle image gets completely overshadowed. Yes, hard as it was, I had to restrain myself from festooning it with my usual hardware and bling. 

The Distress Ink colors I used are Mustard Seed, Spiced Marmalade, Fired Brick, Dusty Concord and Faded Jeans. Both stamps— the foliage and the little butterfly— are from Tim's "Spring Sprung" set.

Drunken Stampers: Cheers to Dad!

Father's Day is coming up on the 20th, and the Drunken Stampers are celebrating with this week's Challenge!

That's my Dad, John Ledbetter, in the photo, with the little girl who would grow up to be his biggest admirer (and undoubtedly his biggest headache, too!). I'm very proud of my Dad. He has a lovably grumpy demeanor, a wicked sense of humor (yes, this is where my "smartass" gene came from), and a huge heart. When I was trying to figure out the text for his Father's Day card, I just kept coming back to the most important thing I know about Dad: He has always, always been there for me.

He's also the kind of guy who can fix anything, and that's exactly what he does in his spare time. Dad has been restoring antique gasoline engines for quite a few years, and it's a hobby that's brought him a lot of happiness and a bunch of new friends from all over the county. He's really good at it, too, and has his own blog, 2EngineJohn, where you can see the cool, perfectly-working things he creates with decrepit old machinery:

Gingersnaps: You Can See Right Through This Challenge!

This week's Spicy Supply Challenge at Gingersnap Creations is all about Transparencies! We're talking acetate, clear dimensional glaze, heck, even Saran Wrap will do! In my case, Memory Glass was the medium of choice. I love this stuff, because it's so well thought out that your projects almost create themselves!

So, you know the clear, pre-printed index sheets that usually come with acrylic stamps? That's where this sweet little moon came from. I just cut it out and colored it with Copic markers, then lightly dripped on some alcohol blending solution to get the smeary, sort-of stained glass look. The image is from the Character Constructions Theater of Dreams #1 set. 

I sandwiched the moon between two pieces of Memory Glass (the front piece is clear, the back piece is frosted— it just looked better that way), then slipped the whole thing into a Memory Frame. 

It was so easy, I kind of feel like I cheated or something.

I attached the pendant to a beaded chain from the craft store, and Voilà! A ten-minute necklace!

Drunken Stampers: They Say It's Your Birthday!

We're celebrating birthdays at Drunken Stampers this week! Actually, we're celebrating all month, since both of our list moms have birthdays in June. So, most importantly:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PEGGY and SPIKE!

Have a margarita for me, ladies!

As far as this little card goes, it started with a TV Doodle. You know: You're watching TV and mindlessly scribbling while waiting to see who gets eliminated from "Top Chef," and when the show is over you have a little drawing. TV Doodles are of course closely related to Telephone Doodles, and I'm sure psychologists have a field day with these things. Some people doodle houses, some people doodle stars and plants... I doodle cats. Sometimes monkeys, but usually cats. Don't know why.

This particular TV Doodle was done with Copics (we'll call that "Power Doodling") and inked around the border with Victorian Velvet Distress Ink. The plaid background was made using Tim Holtz's über-cool Alcohol Ink technique from last year's "12 Tags of Christmas." The background behind the background is sanded Cor'dinations paper, and the crown and swirly thing are gold-painted Grungeboard.

We really do have a whole lotta fun at Drunken Stampers, and we'd love to see your favorite birthday-related creation! This challenge is "live" through next Friday (June 11). Come on over and join the party!

Our overarching theme for June at Gingersnap Creations is "Flight," and this week's challenge is to create art that in some way incorporates Wings! Birds, butterflies, hang gliders, my hair when the layers have grown too long... you know, anything like that. 

This is the time of year when the Western Tanagers are migrating through Boise, and they are the most gorgeous little creatures! I figured this challenge would be a good opportunity to create a little homage to these sweet, tiny birds. Cooler still: another opportunity to bust out the Tim Holtz Caged Bird die!
